Chilean Peso
The peso is the currency of Chile. The current peso has circulated since 1975, with a previous version circulating between 1817 and 1960. Its symbol is defined as a letter S with either one or two vertical bars superimposed prefixing the amount, $ or ; the single-bar symbol, available in most modern text systems, is almost always used. Both of these symbols are used by many currencies, most notably the United States dollar, and may be ambiguous without clarification, such as CLP$ or US$. The ISO 4217 code for the present peso is CLP. It was divided into 100 centavos until this subdivision was eliminated by law effective 1 January 1984, after inflation had rendered the centavo valueless, requiring accounts to be kept in whole pesos thereafter. As of July 2026, the Chilean peso traded at around CLP 930 per U.S. dollar. The current peso was introduced on 29 September 1975 by decree 1,123, replacing the escudo at a rate of 1 peso for 1,000 escudos. The currency is issued by the Central Bank of Chile, founded in 1925 and made responsible for monetary policy and control of the money supply, and produced by the Casa de Moneda de Chile (the Chilean mint), which traces its origin to a royal charter (Real Cédula) issued by King Philip V of Spain on 1 October 1743 authorizing a mint in Santiago.
Turkish lira
The lira (Turkish: Türk lirası; sign: ₺; ISO 4217 code: TRY; abbreviation: TL) is the official currency of Turkey. It is also legal tender in the de facto state of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. One lira is divided into one hundred kuruş. The First Turkish lira could be further subdivided, where one kuruş was equal to 40 para. The current lira is the Second Turkish lira, having succeeded the first Turkish lira in 2005 which in turn succeeded the Ottoman lira in 1923. Since 2018 the Turkish lira has been in crisis, having plummeted in value following Turkish president Erdoğan's economic and political policies.
